Your privacy

A locked one-to-one chat stays on the phones.

Here's what PIING protects, what our servers still see, and the choices you have. For the legal detail, read our Privacy Policy.

What's protected

End to end

One-to-one chats, photos, videos and files are end-to-end encrypted. Groups and Stories too, when everyone in them has a current app. A one-to-one call is encrypted between the two phones. A group call is encrypted on the way and is not end-to-end.

Post-quantum

One-to-one chats have post-quantum protection, so a recording of today's chat stays private if computers get much stronger.

On your phone

Messages are saved in an encrypted database on your phone, and you can lock chats with Face ID.

Contacts

Contacts are turned into codes on your phone to find friends on PIING. Your address book isn't uploaded or stored. New accounts aren't findable by phone number unless they turn it on.

Being straight with you

  • MetadataOur servers can see who messages whom and when, so they can deliver messages. Not what you say.
  • Voice-note transcriptsOn an iPhone, tap-to-transcribe and call captions run on the phone. A transcript is sent on only if you allow AI services in Settings, and then the text is kept with that message.
  • Live videoA live is not end-to-end encrypted. The picture and sound go through our live service so people can watch. PIING does not record it.
  • CarPlay, Watch, widgets and AndroidWhat each Apple feature can see, including CarPlay, and what the Android app asks for, is in the Privacy Policy, section 1B and section 1C. Face tracking for Lenses is section 1A.
  • NearbyBluetooth messages are encrypted, but without post-quantum protection.
  • Web chatEncrypted on the way, not end to end; see Security for the details.
  • No ads, no ad trackersWe don't sell your data, and the app has no advertising code.
